Turkey, layer and mixed poultry farms confirmed to have H5N2 avian influenza

Eleven new cases of H5N2 avian influenza were confirmed on May 5 by the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). The virus was confirmed in flocks in Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Nine of the new avian influenza cases were reported in commercial turkey operations, one involved a layer hen operation, while the other involved mixed poultry.

The cases confirmed on May 5 include:

  1. Wright County, Iowa – 1.03 million chickens
  2. Cherokee County Iowa – 100,000 turkeys, second detection in the county
  3. Lewis County, Missouri – Mixed birds, number pending
  4. Barron County, Wisconsin – 57,200 turkeys, fourth detection in the county
  5. Barron County, Wisconsin – 182,400 turkeys, fifth detection in the county
  6. Nicollet County, Minnesota – Turkeys, number pending
  7. Pipestone County, Minnesota -- 72,200 turkeys, second detection in the county
  8. Swift County, Minnesota -- 151, 300 turkeys, fifth detection in the county
  9. Kandiyohi County, Minnesota -- 89,100 turkeys, 27th detection in the county
  10. Kandiyohi County, Minnesota -- 37,300 turkeys, 29th detection in the county (gap in numbers reflects delay in confirmatory testing of some samples)
  11. Kandiyohi County, Minnesota -- 40,600 turkeys, 30th detection in the county
