Pasta company seeks to complete transition to cage-free eggs by 2020

Pasta maker Barilla has revealed that it will source all of its eggs from cage-free operations, with the transition expected to be completed by 2020.

Barilla has already started the transition, as the company has exclusively used cage-free eggs in its Le Emiliane pasta, its Mulino Bianco and Pavesi Bakery products since 2012.

The cage-free announcement was made along with the company’s recent animal welfare policy. “Barilla acknowledges animals as sentient beings and recognizes that animal welfare encompasses both the physical and mental well-being of animals as well as their ability to express species-specific behaviors,” the company stated.

Barilla joins a list of companies have made recent commitments to source cage-free eggs. Since mid-2015, McDonald’s, Arby’s, Subway, Shake Shack, Dunkin’ Donuts, Jack in the Box, Qdoba, Taco Bell, Panera Bread, Peet’s Coffee & Tea, Caribou Coffee, Einstein Bros. Bagels, Grupo Bimbo, Wendy’s and Quiznos have made similar pledges to source cage-free eggs.

Established in 1877, Barilla is an Italian family-owned food company with a presence in more than 100 countries, according to the company’s website.
