2016 U.S. turkey production projections lowered

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has raised its forecast for broiler production and egg production in the U.S. for 2016, but the agency lowered its forecast for turkey production.

The new estimates were offered in USDA’s World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report, released on February 9.

U.S. broiler production

USDA’s projection for U.S. broiler production in 2016 in the February WASDE report is estimated at 41.03 billion pounds, an increase from the 40.95 billion pound estimate offered in the January WASDE report.

The agency has upped its projections as recent hatchery data shows faster-than-expected growth in chis placed. Another factor considered is that bird weights continue to increase.

U.S. broiler production was estimated at 40.04 billion pounds in 2015 and 38.55 billion pounds in 2014.

U.S. egg production

Estimates for 2016 U.S. egg production were raised from 8.17 billion dozen in the January report to 8.18 billion dozen in the February report. The agency raised its forecast because hatching egg production has increased.

U.S. egg production was estimated at 7.9 billion dozen in 2015 and 8.34 billion dozen in 2014.

U.S. turkey production

The USDA’s February forecast for U.S. turkey production in 2016 has been lowered to 5.94 billion pounds, down from the agency’s January estimate of 6.02 billion pounds.

The lower expectations are based on hatchery data.

An estimated 5.63 billion pounds of turkey were produced in 2015, while 2014 figures were at 5.76 billion pounds.
